Description

Madrid, Spain. 1763, One Share, 16 ½” x 12 ¼”. Our Lady of the Rosary and St. Francis of Assisi, top center. Illuminated “C” at the beginning of the text in the lower paragraph. Organized by the five major guilds of Madrid, silk, wool, clothing merchants, jewelers and drapers. The top border is a bit narrow, but otherwise, this handsome example is in an excellent state of preservation. This company quickly became the most important commercial venture of the century. The company collected royal taxes, controlled the royal silk factories, built the Aragon Canal, supplied the army and navy with food and clothing, had its own fleet of ships, and was a bank. All went well until the Napoleonic Wars and the independence of Spain’s American colonies interrupted trade. It was finally liquidated in 1746. (John E. Herzog Collection)
