Description

Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain 1835-1910). ALS, 1 page, on black bordered Riverdale on the Hudson stationery, from York Harbor, Maine, September 4, 1902. With original stamped envelope addressed in his hand to "Mr.Lester Grant, Twyford, Tupwood Lane, Gaterham Valley, England" with "Great Britain" also written in his hand at the top. The envelope bears a 3 pence due marking indicating the recipient had to pay the postage, for which Twain humorously "apologizes" in the letter: "York Harbor Maine, Sept. 4, 1902. Dear Mr. Grant, I am out of stamps; it is raining; the post office is far away from this summer camp. This is why I am obliged to make you pay the postage, though I would much rather do it myself. Truly yours, Mark Twain". (Mark Twain, USA, 1835 - 1910), Two horizontal folds, and a few mounting remnants but the condition is excellent.
