Dean as “Major of Infantry.” Robert Shaw Oliver (1847-1935) served as Assistant Secretary of War from 1902-1913. Dean (1865-1939), West Point Class of 1887, served on frontier duty (1887-1888) and at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. In Puerto Rico and Cuba during the Spanish-American War (1898-1899), Dean was promoted to Captain in 1899, later serving in Alaska (1906-1908). After his promotion to Major by the commission here offered, Dean served in Manila then on the West Coast. In World War I, promoted to Brigadier General, National Army, by President Woodrow Wilson in 1917, James T. Dean served in France, commanding the 156th Infantry Brigade, 78th Division, in St. Mihiel and in Argonne-Meuse Campaigns. He retired as Brigadier General, U.S.A. in 1930.
