Description

Washington, D.C., July 27, 1813. Appointment of George B. McCulloch as “a sailing Master in the Navy if the United States.” By 1820, Lieutenant George B. McCulloch was stationed in Philadelphia as a recruiting officer. The Navy reported that on December 31, 1827, Lieutenant George B. McCulloch of the U.S.S. Constitution had died ”of disease” and was buried ashore in Port Mahon, on the Spanish island of Minorca, the next day. William Jones (1760-1831) served as Madison’s Secretary of the Navy from January 1813 to December 1814. From April 21, 1813, to February 9, 1814, Jones also served as Madison's Secretary of Treasury while Secretary Albert Gallatin was in Europe on diplomatic missions.
